Indians, Carl Pavano agree to $1.5M, 1-year deal (AP)The Cleveland Indians and free-agent pitcher Carl Pavano, a four-year bust with the New York Yankees because of injuries, agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Tuesday. Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said that Pavano, who turns 33 on Thursday, is guaranteed a spot in Cleveland's rotation as long as he's healthy following spring training.

General manager Mark Shapiro admits the two acquisitions have eaten up the bulk of the Indians' offseason financial resources. However, Shapiro also said he hopes the team is not done with its tinkering.
Specifically, Shapiro would like to add a veteran starting pitcher to a rotation with only two spots settled: Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee and No. 2 starter Fausto Carmona. As the new year began, the final three spots in the rotation would figure to come from a group that includes Anthony Reyes, Jeremy Sowers, Aaron Laffey, Scott Lewis and David Huff. ...

After some debate and a trade, the Cleveland Indians have decided not to shift their infield. The club acquired versatile infielder Mark DeRosa to place third base on Wednesday, trading three minor leaguers to the Chicago Cubs. They dealt pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Gaub for DeRosa, who played six different positions for the NL Central champions.

Santiago, ex-Negro leaguer, dies at 82 (AP)Carlos Manuel Santiago, a star infielder in the Negro leagues during the 1940s, died Sunday. He was 82. He died of cardiac failure at his home in Mayaguez, son Carlos Manuel Santiago Feliciano said. Santiago played second base and shortstop for the New York Cubans in 1945-46. He was invited to spring training by the Cleveland Indians in 1951 but was soon drafted into the U.S.
