Romero, Mitre suspended 50 games each by MLB (AP)
Phillies reliever J.C. Romero was suspended for the first 50 games of next season on Tuesday after testing positive for a banned substance contained in a supplement developed by convicted BALCO chemist Patrick Arnold. Yankees minor league pitcher Sergio Mitre also was suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned substance in an over-the-counter supplement.

Proctor's 1-year contract with Marlins finalized (AP)Right-hander Scott Proctor's one-year deal with the Florida Marlins has been finalized after the reliever passed his physical, the team said Tuesday. Proctor reached an agreement last week on a $750,000, one-year contract with an additional $250,000 in incentives. "Scott brings experience to our staff and provides us with depth at the back of the bullpen," general manager Larry Beinfest said.

After a strong rookie season, right-hander Chris Volstad is wasting little time getting ready for 2009.
Volstad, 22, has been working out since November at the team's spring training site in Jupiter, Fla. He was prepared to start a throwing program shortly after the New Year, a tune-up for the first day of camp on Feb. 14.
"I'm really fired up," he said. "I can't wait to start playing again."
The team's top draft pick (16th overall) in 2005, Volstad is projected to be Florida's No. 3 starter, behind right-handers Ricky Nolasco and Josh Johnson. Marlins, Josh Johnson agree to 1-year contract (AP)The Florida Marlins and pitcher Josh Johnson have agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract. Johnson, 23, returned from elbow surgery in July to post a 7-1 record and a 3.61 ERA. He is 19-11 in three seasons, including 0-3 in an injury-shortened 2007, with a career ERA of 3.54. According to the agreement, he would get a $25,000 bonus each for 31 and 33 starts.
