    A's general manager Billy Beane said he planned to add a big bat to the lineup this winter, and he wound up doing so in splashy fashion early in the offseason.

    Beane acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday in exchange for right-handed reliever Huston Street, left-handed starter Greg Smith and highly regarded young outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who spent much of 2008 in the big leagues with Oakland.

    Gonzalez's inclusion was particularly notable, considering he was the centerpiece of the Dan Haren deal with Arizona a year ago, and the A's are likely to retain Holliday for only one season (or less). Holliday, who will earn $13.5 million in 2009, will be a free agent following the season, and he has the potential to get a multiyear package in the $100 million...
