  • Beason quickly becomes Panthers' defensive leader (AP)

In this June 6, 2007, file photo, Carolina Panthers' Jon Beason runs with the ball after intercepting a pass during the NFL football team's coaching session practice in Charlotte, N.C. The middle linebacker prepares for his first playoff game with plenty of pressure as the Panthers face the high-scoring Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Charlotte.

Jon Beason is ahead of schedule. Again. Whether it's reading a play, getting to the ball carrier, racking up records or winning awards, the Carolina Panthers linebacker does things before people expect them to happen. Now, armed with his first Pro Bowl selection, Beason will play in his first playoff game Saturday when the Panthers (12-4) face Arizona (10-7) in the NFC divisional round.

  • Ward's modest goal turns into much more (Yahoo! Sports)Derrick Ward not only stayed healthy, but the Giants RB could cash in big during the offseason.
  • Panthers prepare game plan for high-scoring Cards (AP)

This Oct. 26, 2008 file photo shows Carolina Panthers' Steve Smith (89) reacting after a catch during an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals in Charlotte, N.C.

When Ken Lucas was called for a pivotal pass interference penalty late in Carolina's loss to the New York Giants in Week 16, it marked the first and only such penalty for the Panthers all season. It also didn't take long for this often-repeated snide response from cynical fans and skeptical analysts: How can you be called for interference when you're never close to the receiver?

  • Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Steve Smith doesn't like comparing the Carolina Panthers team that went to the Super Bowl in 2003 to this year's club.

"We don't want to compare—they lost," Smith said referring to the Panthers' 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots five years ago in Super Bowl XXXVIII, a game that Smith was a part of. "You talking about 2003? We were losers. I don't want to compare to losers. We lost. You can compare yourself to a loser, but I don't compare myself to a loser."

And yet the comparisons are inevitable because this year's Panthers team is viewed as having the best chance to win the Super Bowl since that '03 team came oh-so-close to bringing the Vince Lombardi trophy to Charlotte.

Sure, the 2005 Panthers reached the NFC Championship Game, but by the time they got...

  • Chargers, Cardinals win wild-card games (AP) Neither home team was favored in Saturday's wild-card games. Both won, with San Diego stunning Indianapolis in overtime 23-17 and Arizona beating Atlanta 30-24. Speedy Darren Sproles scooted 22 yards for the winning score 6:20 into overtime for the Chargers, ending Indianapolis' nine-game winning streak a day after its quarterback, Peyton Manning, won his third Associated Press NFL MVP award.
  • Panthers win with Delhomme's new elbow, odd style (AP)Jake Delhomme's critics have plenty of material to work with. His arm isn't that strong. He doesn't move well. He seemingly throws balls up for grabs and Steve Smith bails him out. He always has a mediocre passer rating. And why is he yelling at his teammates? All that, and the fiery Delhomme is 54-32 in six seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including 5-2 in the playoffs.
  • Falcons, Cardinals unlikely playoff participants (AP)

In this Oct. 12, 2008 file photo, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan looks down field during an NFL football game against the Chicago Bears at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Atlanta vs. Arizona. Now there's an NFL playoff pairing no one anticipated five months ago.

One staged a remarkable one-season turnaround with a smooth, efficient rookie at the controls. The other emerged from a legacy of losing behind the ageless arm of a gunslinging veteran. The Atlanta Falcons vs. the Arizona Cardinals was not exactly a predictable playoff pairing when the season began. Their wild card matchup on Saturday is yet another example of the parity that prevails in the NFL.

  • Panthers spending weekend in front of TV (AP)Before the Carolina Panthers finished a leisurely workout Friday, coach John Fox handed out weekend instructions to his players: rest, stay out of trouble and watch football on TV. A key perk of being the No. 2 seed in the NFC is a first-round bye and a second-round home game. Meanwhile, their opponent on Jan.
  • Wild first week for Panthers' Parker ends with win (AP)Before John Kasay lined up for a 42-yard field goal attempt Sunday that would determine if Carolina got a first-round bye in the playoffs, J'Vonne Parker nervously ran on the field to line up as the right end. Parker had been a Panther for five days. But a rash of injuries had left him the only big body to fill a hole on a play that would determine if the Panthers would be the No.
  • KO specialist Lloyd valuable for Panthers (AP)

In this Nov. 16, 2008 file photo, Carolina Panthers kicker Rhys Lloyd (5) relaxes before the start of an NFL football game against the Detroit Lions in Charlotte, N.C.

Rhys Lloyd has one of the cushiest jobs in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers' stocky kicker with the booming leg and English accent spends about a minute on the field per game, sending kickoffs usually into the end zone and watching an opponent take a knee. He then trots off and lets John Kasay do the high pressure place-kicking.

  • What's in a name? Plenty for Panthers' Williams (AP)Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have a new nickname and added some spice to their disagreement with Tennessee's running back tandem of LenDale White and Chris Johnson. After rushing for 178 yards and breaking the Panthers' single-season rushing record with 1,515 yards in a 33-31 win over New Orleans on Sunday, Williams announced he had created a Web site,...

  • Banged-up Panthers welcome first-round bye (AP)Carolina Panthers coach John Fox spent last week insisting too much is made of having a bye in the playoffs, repeatedly mentioning how the New York Giants didn't have a week off last year en route to winning the Super Bowl. But a day after avoiding a monumental collapse in beating New Orleans 33-31 on John Kasay's last-second field goal, Fox had a different message.
  • NFC playoffs: Giants repeat? Cards exposed? (Yahoo! Sports)From a potential Giants repeat to Philly's threat level, there's plenty of intrigue entering the NFL postseason.
  • Winners and losers: McNabb, Reid stay alive (Yahoo! Sports)Written off after a blowout loss to the Ravens, Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid aren't quite done in Philly.
  • Dolphins, Vikings, Panthers clinch divisions (AP) From the ugliness of 1-15 to the beauty of an AFC East title. That's the Miami Dolphins' story this season. The tale was nearly as good for the Atlanta Falcons, who went from 4-12 to an NFC wild-card berth. And for the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers, who surged from 7-9 to 12-4. Minnesota improved by two games to 10-6 and that was good enough for the NFC North crown.
  • Brees, Peterson, Johnson lead NFL in major stats (AP) Drew Brees was comfortable with falling just short of breaking the NFL single-season passing record. The New Orleans Saints quarterback finished 15 yards shy of Dan Marino's mark, but still led the league in passing for the second time in three years. "When I sit back and look at it, that record's stood for a long time.
  • Panthers top Saints 33-31 on Kasay last-second FG (AP)

John Kasay came through in his last, best chance to guarantee the Carolina Panthers would have a playoff game on their home field, where they are unbeaten. DeAngelo Williams rushed for 178 yards, Steve Smith had 134 yards receiving, and Kasay's 42-yard field goal with a second left lifted Carolina to a 33-31 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, locking up the NFC South title and the...

  • Thomas inactive, McAllister starts (AP)The Saints deactivated Pierre Thomas and inserted Deuce McAllister as the starting running back against Carolina on Sunday in what could be McAllister's final game with the Saints. • Brees guns for record vs. playoff-bound Panthers (AP)The last thing Drew Brees wanted to think about, while digging into a ribeye at a steakhouse in the French Quarter this week, was the hallowed passing record he has a slim chance to break against Carolina on Sunday. He soon realized he didn't have much choice. "I had 10 people come up to me ... and every single one of them said nothing other than, 'We hope you break that record.' That was all they...

  • Williams fueled by desire to never get caught (AP)The 75-yard run is still the longest in Carolina Panthers history -- and perhaps DeAngelo Williams' most embarrassing football moment. Getting caught from behind before reaching the end zone on that long run at Arizona last season brought razzing from his teammates, led to a heart-to-heart talk with a cagey veteran, and fueled a burning desire to get fitter, stronger and better.
  • Panthers DT Lewis doubtful for Saints (PA SportsTicker)CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After missing practice for the third straight day Friday, Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Damione Lewis is listed as doubtful for Sunday's critical game at New Orleans.
