Vikings give Peterson day off to rest beat-up body (AP)The Minnesota Vikings gave Adrian Peterson's body a break. Peterson was held out of Thursday's practice; he did some running in the pool instead. Coach Brad Childress said he decided the NFL's leading rusher needed a day to rest after taking plenty of hard hits in last week's game against Tampa Bay. "You just trust what you see," Childress said.

Vikings practice without 'Williams Wall' (AP)

The Minnesota Vikings went to work Thursday without their star defensive tackles. Perhaps it will serve as good practice, to learn what playing without them would be like. While Kevin Williams and Pat Williams met with NFL officials to discuss their positive test for a banned diuretic, Bumetanide, their teammates prepared for Sunday's game at Jacksonville.

Vikings Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The Vikings wasted an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the NFC North on Sunday by losing at Tampa Bay. But that loss did little to dampen Minnesota's playoff hopes or enthusiasm.
The Vikings (5-5) remain tied atop the NFC North with Chicago and Green Bay and will attempt to stay in that spot, or create a bit of separation, when they make another trip to Florida on Sunday to play the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"It's a new season," Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte said. "Everybody is 0-0 right now, and we're all tied and we all have six games to go. We've got to make the most of our opportunities. (The Jacksonville game) is a huge game for us. We have to go down, and we have to give it our best." The Vikings also will have to win on the road, something...

John Lynch retires after 15 years in NFL (AP)

No more bone-jarring tackles for John Lynch. The hard-hitting, nine-time Pro Bowl safety retired Monday, saying it was time to begin a new phase of life after 11 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and four more with the Denver Broncos. He felt so strongly about the relationships he built with both clubs that he decided against stepping down in the colors of either team.

He was moved from the reserve physically unable to perform list to the 53-man roster last Wednesday, then practiced the remainder of the...

Bucs defense braces for heavy dose of Peterson (AP)Monte Kiffin is not one to throw around a bunch of superlatives when he talks about a young football player. Ask him about Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, though, and the architect of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense is tempted to let go. "He's big, he's fast, he's powerful, he's can stop on a dime, he's quick, he loves football, he plays hard," Kiffin said before pausing to take a breath.

Vikings list Madieu Williams doubtful for Sunday (AP)Minnesota Vikings safety Madieu Williams is doubtful for Sunday's game with a shoulder injury that limited him in practice this week. Coach Brad Childress said Friday that Williams's condition is unrelated to the neck problem that kept him out of the first seven games of the season. Williams was hurt Wednesday when he fell hard on his shoulder during the special teams portion of practice.
