  • Islanders Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Following a surprisingly competitive start, the Islanders have posted two wins, 16 regulation losses and two overtime/shootout defeats in their last 20 games.

Even the front office's most ardent Kool-Aid dispensers would have to acknowledge that as an ugly quarter-segment of an NHL season that reached only the halfway turn Monday at Edmonton.

Meanwhile, coach Scott Gordon continues to praise his lottery-bound team's work ethic in the throes of an absurd 250-plus man-games lost to injury in half a season. He even has resorted to an old standby, dusting off the lack-of-respect card when referring to the league and its referees' recent treatment of the Islanders following their latest loss to the Oilers.

There seems to be no such thing as an easy two points for the Edmonton Oilers, even when they're at home against a struggling team. Andrew Cogliano's goal midway through the third period gave Edmonton a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Monday night. "We just couldn't lose this game," Cogliano said.

San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov, of Kazakhstan, stops a shot on goal against the New York Islanders during the third period of an NHL hockey game in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009. San Jose won 5-3.

As well as the San Jose Sharks played for the first half of the game, coach Todd McLellan was more concerned about the lackadaisical way his team finished. Mike Grier scored two goals in a game for the first time in nearly two years and the San Jose Sharks held on to beat the New York Islanders 5-3 Saturday night to extend their run of dominance on home ice.

  • DiPietro, Hunter return for Islanders (PA SportsTicker)Despite the outcome of the game, the New York Islanders received a boost to begin the new year Friday as starting goaltender Rick DiPietro returned to the lineup in a 5-4 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes.
  • Doan, Jokinen score to lift Coyotes past Islanders (AP)

Phoenix Coyotes' Mikael Tellqvist, left, of Sweden, skates back to the bench to get his facemask fixed after getting a stick to the face as New York Islanders' Josh Bailey (12) skates behind in the second period of an NHL hockey game on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009 in Glendale, Ariz. The Coyotes defeated the Islanders 5-4.

Doug Weight earned the admiration of his teammates -- and opponents -- with a milestone pass. Weight's first of two assists Friday night made him the eighth American-born player to reach 1,000 points, but the New York Islanders lost 5-4 to the Phoenix Coyotes. "It was unbelievable for the team to stand up and give me a hand and the crowd, too," Weight said.

  • Comrie nets 2; Isles rally to beat Panthers 4-2 (AP)It isn't often the New York Islanders have such a comfortable lead they can afford to think about anything other than winning. Yet, on New Year's Eve before a long flight out west, Doug Weight had his sights set on his 1,000th NHL point. That milestone wasn't reached Wednesday, but the Islanders headed to the airport feeling good about a solid 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.

  • Rangers score four in third, beat Isles 5-4 (AP)

New York Islanders' Trent Hunter, front, looks for a shot while being followed by New York Rangers' Markus Naslund during the first period of an NHL hockey game Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Rangers beat the Islanders 5-4.

Petr Prucha provides quite a punch when he gets into the New York Rangers lineup. His only problem has been getting regular work. Prucha got the Rangers even Monday night when he scored one of New York's four third-period goals that carried them to a 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders. The speedy Czech forward has only two goals this season, but both were scored after lengthy benchings.

  • Islanders RW Hunter leaves game (PA SportsTicker)New York Islanders right wing Trent Hunter left Monday's 5-4 loss to the New York Rangers in the third period after absorbing a check along the boards by Ryan Callahan.
  • Isles G DiPietro out again due to injury (AP)Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro lasted only one game before another injury forced him out of the lineup again. DiPietro, the Islanders' franchise goalie, has played only four times in New York's 37 games this season. He returned Friday after a 27-game absence and made 28 saves in the Islanders' 4-1 victory that snapped the club's 10-game losing streak.

Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller makes a save on the New York Islanders during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008. Buffalo won in a shoot-out 4-3.

Despite snapping a three-game winless streak, the Buffalo Sabres aren't taking any solace from gaining two points the hard way. Ales Kotalik and Drew Stafford scored shootout goals, and Ryan Miller stopped both of New York's attempts in Buffalo's 4-3 victory over the Islanders on Saturday night. The Sabres, though, squandered a late third-period lead, and the Islanders tied it with a pair of goals...

  • Islanders RW Guerin nets 400th career goal (PA SportsTicker)Veteran right wing Bill Guerin scored twice to record his 400th career goal as the New York Islanders snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
  • Guerin reaches 400 goals, Islanders win (AP)

New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro takes a break during a timeout in the third period against the Toronto Maple Leafs during NHL hockey action Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 in Uniondale, N.Y.

Rick DiPietro returned to the goal just over two months after meniscus surgery. Bill Guerin scored twice to reach 400 NHL goals. But the most unusual aspect for the New York Islanders: they won. DiPietro stopped 28 shots, and Kyle Okposo and Freddy Meyer added goals to give the Islanders their first win in 11 games, a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night.

  • Islanders C Hilbert leaves game (PA SportsTicker)New York Islanders center Andy Hilbert left Friday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second period with a foot injury.
  • DiPietro returns to Islanders (AP)Rick DiPietro returned to the New York Islanders' lineup Friday night, starting against Toronto after missing 27 games following his second knee surgery in five months. Coming off surgery on his right knee in June, DiPietro had appeared in only three games this season, the last a one-period stint against Carolina on Oct.
