By rights, a team that has been as shabby as the Maple Leafs have been this season in penalty killing should not be anywhere near a playoff spot.
But Toronto, 29th of 30 teams in the NHL in that area and last at home, is defying the odds.
The Leafs gave up another on the man advantage to start Saturday's game against the Ottawa Senators, but they survived two 5-on-3s and scored the winner goal on a play that began with defenseman Pavel Kubina exiting the box. The 3-1 win allowed them to keep pace on an ever changing Eastern Conference leaderboard, within five points of the eighth-place Buffalo Sabres.
Toronto is actually a better disciplined team this season—the Leafs had been shorthanded only 138 times before Saturday.
